Killer Shades Excerpt!

Sighing, he rubbed the back of his neck and strode toward the victim sprawled across the yellow line. Ten yards in and he recognized the vic. Air hissed into his lungs, and he nearly choked on it. Wayne. He had to be dead. No one could live through that head wound. What the hell. Alarm exploded inside his chest as he looked around at the people on the street and the vicinity. Then he saw her, and the air left his lungs in one, big whoosh. But he didn’t relax. Quite the opposite.

Jenna.

His chest tightened almost painfully.

Their gazes meshed across a good thirty yards that separated them. Even from this distance, he noticed the color had leached from her face and accented her lips and the dark wings of her brows. Still, she was as beautiful as ever. The mahogany mane of hair, thick and luscious, flowed around her shoulders. Her eyes, such an incredible blue, always seemed to pierce through him to that deep, dark area of his soul he never wanted anyone to delve into. But she had. She’d wanted to know everything about him, only to promptly leave him when she’d learned exactly who he was.

Enough. Forget the bitterness, forget the hurt. He only had seconds to get over being blindsided.

Shyness Births a Heroine

Thank you to the wonderful Butterscotch Martini Girls for having me on the blog today.  They aren’t just great writers but great friends too. Whoohoo! Love you gals!

I’m Lexi Post and I write erotic romance inspired by the classics. My newest book, TRACE’S TROUBLE is coming out in a 9 novella boxed set Ring in a Cowboy on December 28th. Only 2 more days! Yay! This is a contemporary cowboy story and the second book in the Last Chance series. While the book was inspired by a classic western short story called “Miggles,” by Bret Harte, the heroine’s character came directly from my own background.

Though some people find it hard to believe, as I was growing up I was incredibly shy. The reason for this was that because my family moved a lot, I was in a different school every two years, so by time I hit high school, even though I got to stay there for 4 years, I was already hesitant to make friends, speak up in class, or go to dances. Oh, I did have a couple friends here and there and I value them to this day, but it is so easy to put myself back there and remember what it was like to be shy.

So when I introduced Whisper in the first book in the Last Chance series, CHRISTMAS WITH ANGEL, and had in my head that she’d moved around a lot as well, I just had to make her different. Not just different in general, but different from me and how I reacted to having to meet new classmates every 2 years. So Whisper turned out how I would have liked to be, bold. Then again, she didn’t spend much time with people at all and was home schooled so that had something to do with her, um, lack of social skills.

Yup, Whisper is much happier hanging out with the Arizona wildlife than people and is quite blunt about it. She even tells the hero, Trace, “You can leave now.” She never says things like “I’m glad I could help,” “It’s nice to meet you,” or “I look forward to seeing you again.” Instead, she says exactly what she thinks or simply keeps quiet, a trait that really baffles Trace. I had so much fun writing this heroine!

TRACE’S TROUBLE is up for pre-order in the Ring in a Cowboy boxed set, but if you can’t wait to read about Whisper, you can meet her in CHRISTMAS WITH ANGEL which is out now. Also, for a chance to win an ecopy of your choice of one of my back list books, enter the Rafflecopter below. I’ve also brought a short excerpt of TRACE’S TROUBLE with me. I hope you enjoy it.

Always, Lexi

When the cowboy closed the door, she turned on him, a smirk curling her lip. “So, did you find out everything you came up here for?”

The man studied her, his eyes hidden by the shadow of his hat. “Yes I did, thank you.”

Huh? “Good. Now you can go.”

He cocked his head. “I would think with no one around for miles you wouldn’t mind a little company for a change.”

“Nope.” At least not his. He had her stomach in knots and she didn’t like it. “Not real partial to people. Animals are much better company.”

Trace laughed at her statement, sending a pleasant sensation over her body, like the sprinkle of a light rain.

“I have to admit to having that thought a time or two, especially in the ranch house. But the barn can be peaceful, even soothing. I like listening to the sound of a horse munching on dinner while another chuffs and moves around in the shavings.” He looked off in the distance as if seeing every detail. “As dusk comes on, you can hear the crickets, and the desert mice scampering back into their nests.” His gaze locked with hers. “Nature is more straightforward than man.”

Feeling a sense of kinship with him at his description, it took her a moment to catch the undertone of bitterness in his final statement. Her mind eased as she sensed he might understand. “Yeah, I get that. A horse lets you know exactly how she feels. You also know how a coyote or mountain lion feels the second you find yourself in their company.”

He grinned. “You in the company of those animals often up here?”

She shrugged. “Faust comes by when he’s hungry and—” At his intent stare, she halted. “Anyway, you were leaving, right?”
